Rhydian’s Song Of The Week - Somewhere - Barbra Streisand

Classically-trained  Rhydian Roberts is to cover Barbra Streisand’s song “Somewhere” this weekend on X Factor. It will be a return to the serious side of music for Rhydian, who has been glammed up by mentor Dannii Minogue in recent weeks and belted out classics such as Go West, complete with sailors and fur coats. The song choices were originally going to be Motown classics, but have since been changed to love songs.

Leon will sing Ray Charles’ You Don’t Know Me, while Beverley is set to have a go at Without You - a beautiful ballad originally sung by Harry Nilsson but made legendary by Mariah Carey in the 1990s.

Fellow over-25 contestant Niki will attempt Jennifer Rush’s The Power of Love and Hope will stay current with Hurt, a song by Christina Aguilera.

Finally, brother-sister duo Same Difference will bring their own sprinkling of cheese to Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now - a 1987 hit originally written as the theme tune to the film Mannequin.

Rhydian is so different to the other contestants, got bags of confidence, big ego, No sob story or doesn’t cry, unique singing style and a good entertainer.

Wonderful choice! I think Rhyd will absolutely belt this one out and it will be amazing!

We wish the Rhydler good luck this week…bit worried about the song, it has to be said. After all he is singing a woman’s song and that might not be in his best interests. Having said that, I think Beverley is singing Without You by Nilsson, which is one of my all time favourites. Should be an interesting line up!

With all due respect, the song “Somewhere” is not a “woman’s song”–It is from the Broadway musical “West Side Story” and was originally sung by a man on stage. It has been recorded and performed by many men since then, from Frank Sinatra to Tom Jones, although Streisand’s version is a famous one. Rhydian will soar with this timeless classic and it will speak to all people, regardless of gender, because its message is universal. Hope it’s acceptable for a bloke from America to join the conversation. After all, we love him on this side of the pond, as well. :-)

Barbara Streisand is just one of many, many artists to have covered the song which originally appeared in the Musical West Side Story. Didn’t Pet Shop Boys cover it too?

Sally32 this is what I am worried about….Simon Cowell made the point that after last week’s performance when he sung Go West, he may have alienated a large part of his core fan base. This week, singing a song made famous by a woman and if you are correct, the Pet Shop Boys as well, will not help. I would prefer to see him belt out a ballad which is known as a male song! Great to see some Americans are joing the fray! Happy Thanksgiving to DallsFan!! BTW….Dallas is one of my favourite cities in the USA! Tonight is the night, so lets see what happens.

Thanks for the kind words and welcome, LondonMan. It seems the lad did manage to “knock’em dead” with his very classy version of “Somewhere,” so I trust the phones were ringing and ringing on his behalf! I’ve talked my friends in the UK into serving as my telephone surrogates when it’s time to vote, so in a way, I hope I’m doing my small part to help Rhyd reach that World Class status Simon alluded to in previous commentary. Glad you like Dallas, by the way. It’s also been my great privilege over the years to visit London several times and travel throughout the UK–I think your entire country is pure magic. :-)
